My Current Facial Oil Of Choice

I’ve chosen grapeseed oil for my oily acne prone skin. I mix it with grapefruit oil because grapefruit oil is not photosensitive as other citrus oils. Phototoxicity is always something to watch for in essential oils! Perhaps we will save that discussion for another day, but for now let’s give grapeseed oil some spotlight.

Grapeseed oil is an effective treatment for acne and acne scars. The use of grapeseed oil for acneis beneficial principally because it does not clog the pores of the skin and is a source of vitamin E and linoleic acid, both of which benefit the skin. It is a light odorless oil with mild astringent and emollient properties.

This oil is extracted from the seeds found in the solid leftover of the grapes after the liquid has been expressed for the making of wine. Grape seeds are small and hard and this makes the process of extracting the oil a difficult one. Because they are so hard, however, they are resistant to the chemicals and additives involved in the grape growing and winemaking processes.

There is a high concentration of vitamin E in the oil, which is one of the reasons using grapeseedoil for acne is so effective. Vitamin E is an antioxidant which helps in the maintenance of healthy skin eliminating harmful free radicals. It has also been found to help reduce scarring from acne.”

“Another reason for the effectiveness of grapeseed oil for acne is that it is a source of oligomericproanthocyanidin, a powerful antioxidant that can help in neutralizing the free radicals that promote most diseases and conditions such as acne. It is many times more powerful than vitamin E. Oligomeric proanthocyanidin improves and stabilizes the skin protein collagen and resist inflammation and skin damage.”

  1. hi, just to give my own personal experience. I used grapeseed oil on my face before, and while it didn’t worsen my condition too badly it did give me clogged pores from time to time. I would agree that it’s more suitable for acne-prone skin as compared to rosehip oil or coconut oil as I’ve tried those to disastrous effects (cysts that would not stop coming up). They’re really too rich for acne-prone skin. However, grapeseed oil really gets absorbed into your clothes and sheets. It doesn’t linger, it moves in permanently. I have some shirts which I have boiled, soaked in vinegar, washed on the highest possible settings, etc etc and the smell is back again as soon as it’s dry.

Also, I once read that grapeseed oil tends to be extracted through hexane unless explicitly stated otherwise.
